II*

Timber-framed farmhouse, early C17 or earlier. Braced box-frame construction on high stone plinth, some parts with rendered infill, others with brick cladding; roof of stone slates with a chimney on the ridge, one at left side wall and external stone chimney to right side wall. Three-bay baffle-entry plan, the first and third bays built as projecting crosswings, with projecting stair turret to rear of second bay and C19 two-storey outshut to second and third bays.

Two storeys; projecting gables of wings are brick with C19 windows, centre bay is timber-framed mostly concealed by render; single storey stone porch with later lean-to roof in angle of right wing has moulded segmental headed opening, a moulded band following the voussoirs, a corbelled head and a frieze with a circular chamfered recess flanked by two blank shields; under eaves above porch is wooden mullion window (blocked). Return wall of right wing has dressed stone chimney stack and exposed timber framing with two wooden mullion windows. Stair turret at rear has similar timber framing.

Interior: arch-bracing to tie-beams of hall part; large stone chimney stack (probably inserted after first building, replacing original smoke hood) which has large square moulded stone fireplaces to first floor chambers (modern fireplaces at ground floor possibly concealing earlier hearths to second and third bays); beams at ground floor of all three bays are rounded with fillet and stops. Rear stair turret incorporates a first floor garderobe chamber with chute to drain, highly unusual in houses of this size and date.
