Church, dated 1903 at west end, by Paley and Austin. Coursed sandstone with
2-span slate roof. Low building at top of slope. Nave with chancel, south
aisle to same height under separate roof; in late medieval style. Six bays:
south aisle has gabled porch to 1st bay with moulded arch doorway and niche
above containing a statue, another porch to 4th bay with moulded arch doorway
and set-back parapet, to left of this a large flat-headed window with chamfered
surround, king mullion, and 4 lights with tracery in the heads; and 4 other
windows, all in 2-centred arched chamfered openings with hoodmoulds, the 1st
of 2 lights and the others all 3 lights, all with geometrical tracery. North
side of nave has 2 similar windows. West end of 2 equal gables separated by a
prominent buttress has a similar but taller window to the aisle, a 4-light
window to the nave with perpendicular tracery; chancel has wide arched 5-light
window with perpendicular tracery, and a hoodmould. Interior: 7-bay arcade
of squat octagonal columns carrying wide double-chamfered 2-centred arches;
collar-beam roof with Queen posts and collars; font with very tall
Gothic-style carved font cover. History: originally intended west tower not
built because of sloping site. (Reference: Alfred Peel Crawshawbooth and
