Service wing of former country house, C18 (altered). Brick with stone
plinth and dressings, slate roof (part hipped). L-shaped plan, 2 storeys.
West block of 5 bays is higher, has hipped roof, 5 window openings on each
floor of its west wall, all with stone sills and gauged brick heads: some
of these are blocked, remainder have replacement windows with glazing bars.
South side, including lower 2-storey wing to right, has 3 similar ground
floor windows, one large altered opening with French windows, and at the
right end a wide round-headed doorway with radiating glazing bars; above
this a stairlight window also with glazing bars; the 1st floor windows
appear to be later insertions: to the left, 3 large cross windows, and to
the right 8 mullioned lights, both these with continuous dressed stone
surrounds. Interior: ground floor contains servants' hall, and a kitchen
in the wing which has a triple-arched fireplace, the semi-circular
flanking arches with keystones lettered 17 36, the centre a wide
depressed arch with multiple keystones. First-floor room over servants'
hall has on both side walls (including doors) muntin and rail panelling,
the panels containing intricate linear geometrical inlay patterns.
(Probably significantly earlier than C18, and possibly removed from
Old Worden Hall q.v.) At 1st floor of wing are other panelled doors and
part of good early C18 staircase. History: Worden Hall was seat of the
Farington family, principal landowners of Leyland, who removed to this
site (formerly Shaw Hall) from Worden Old Hall (q.v.) in early C18; house
was rebuilt 1840, and recently destroyed by fire.
