Built as a substantial private house, architect J H Chamberlain circa 1870-75.
Akin, though not on such a grand scale, to the architect's later tour de force:
Highbury. Typical of Chamberlain's mature red brick Gothic style with a
wealth of cut and moulded brickwork with floral stone ornament and stone
dressings. Two storeys and attics, compact assymmetrical L plan. Steep
gable end tiled and crested roofs and steep gables. Tall moulded brick chimney
stacks. Coupled and single pointed arch windows. Two storey canted bays
to south garden front. Sash lights, some retaining decorative leading. Alterations
and modernisation to parts of north front but retains shafted porte cochere.
Although the interior has had alterations for hotel use, much of the interior
decorative joinery and door furniture survives. Typical Chamberlain work
with tongue and groove 'Gothic' panelling and brass furniture. The staircase
again is typical of Chamberlain, top lit and with slender turned bannisters
and Gothic newel posts. The drawing room (former library) retains fitted
bookcase with Gothic details and an ornate fireplace with tilework and reredos
like overmantel mirror.
