18.6.87

II

Drinking fountain and canopy. 1885. Cast iron. Decorated round columns have foliated capitals. Each side of the upper part has a multi-cusped round arch and openwork foliage decoration. Above each arch is a circle with ropework border containing a cartouche with the figure of a stork. On one side there is an inscription instead of a stork: "In loving memory of Elizabeth Farley. This fountain was erected by her son Alderman Farley JP 1885". A dome with openwork decoration between ribs is surmounted by an eagle. Some of the column bases are inscribed: "W MACFARLANE & CO GLASGOW".

History

Soon after listing in 1987, permission was granted for relocating the fountain and canopy from Dartmouth Park to High Street, where for a number of years it stood beneath a glazed canopy that extended across the street from the Farley Centre. Between 2012 and 2014 the glazed canopy was removed.
