Pentecostal church and railings. 1903-4 by E Ridgeway. Art
Nouveau Gothic style. Red brick with stone dressings and plinth
with moulded stone copings, also flush stone bands at sill and
lintel levels. Steeply pitched slate roofs with overhanging
eaves and moulded stone copings to gables on wavy headed
kneelers, also with crested ridge tiles, and ridge finials. To
east end of nave ridge is an octagonal wooden cupola with wide
bracketed cornice and a thin tapering lead spire to top. Tower,
and nave with double gabled cross transept bays and narrow
chancel bay. North elevation has tapering tower to west corner
with full height buttresses to all corners. Near the base of
each buttress is a sort of spur with a wavy headed stone with
trefoil headed panels to sides. Between these on the south and
west elevations is a small single light, cavetto moulded window
with cusped ogee tracery and pierced spandrels. Thin trefoil
headed lancets to each sides above with fanciful ogee headed
returned hoodmoulds and a moulded sill stringcourse. Above
again to all sides single cavetto moulded louvred bell openings
with ogee tracery and pierced spandrels, also with moulded sill
stringcourse. Continuous eaves stringcourse above has a frieze
of Tudor flowers and gargoyles to the corner of each buttresses.
Wavy topped parapets over with the buttresses forming angle
corner piers. Thin tapering lead spire over has a circle of
ironwork decoration near the top and a contemporary weathervane.
To east is the nave with a low canted porch bay which has wavy
headed parapets rising up to a central panel with blind cusped
tracery. Below is a deeply chamfered doorcase with elaborately
moulded segment head over which is a returned ogee headed
hoodmould. Contemporary panelled doors have panes of stained
glass. To either side, the porch has single light cavetto
moulded windows with ogee headed tracery, similar to the bell
openings. Similar windows to either side of porch. Over the
porch is a large 7-light segment headed, panel tracery window
with ogee headed hoodmould plus griffin stops. To either side
of the window there are full height triangular sectioned
pilaster strips which rise up over the gable to form small eared
pieces with finials. Over the window is a flush stone band with
three stepped vents. Attached to east corner of the nave is a
tapering octagonal tower with louvred vents to the top and a
domed leaded roof, over a wide bracketed eaves cornice, with
tall iron finial. East and west elevations have two pointed
3-light cavetto moulded panel tracery windows to north with
carved foliage stops to hoodmoulds and double gabled transept
bays to south each with large 4-light pointed panel tracery
windows, also with carved stops to hoodmoulds. Above each
window is a narrow ventilation slit with flush stone band below.
Beyond to south is a low vestry bay with 3-light cavetto moulded
mullion window. Chancel bay is blank. Interior has wide
four-centred moulded arch into the chancel bay with soffit mould
resting on polished marble column corbels with foliage capitals.
Within the bay is a large contemporary organ and to the front is
the original canted pulpit with steps to either side. The nave
has curved oak pews set in a semi-circular arrangement, each pew
with curved top to the benchends, also the original copper
lights and Art Nouveau ironwork trusses. Transept bays have a
tapering pier supporting the arches and open timberwork above.
All windows have contemporary coloured glass designs. Railings
to north and east sides are contemporary with the church and
have decorative panels between sets of plain railings. Each
panel has a curved head between two nailheaded rails and looping
ironwork between rails below. Also to the centre of each set of
railings is a tapering rail with corniced top and a small heart
about half way up. Gates in similar style to north side.
