Country house, in use as old people's home at time of survey
(November 1985). Built between c1806 and c1815 for Henry Hicks,
local mill owner. Ashlar, hipped slate roof, rebuilt yellow brick
stacks. Originally a squarish 3-storey range with full-height
segmental bow to south corner and small service range to west,
enlarged in later C19 with wing to north of 2 storeys and attic and
long service range in 2 sections to west of 2 storeys. Moulded
stone cornice and blocking course and plat bands between floors.
Main front to south east has 5 windows, 6-pane sashes to second
floor, 12-pane to first and ground, larger on ground. Central bay
projects slightly but has cambered recess for full height, with
windows on same plane. Central Doric stone porch with twin
unfluted columns and single rear pilasters, entablature, blocking
course, and half-glazed double inner doors with side lights and
fielded lower panels. Later north range has 2 large single-storey
bows. Fenestration similar throughout. Later rear service wings
in coursed and dressed stone, and rubble stone, both with quoins.
Interior retains curved cantilever staircase to rear of hall with
wreathed and ramped hand rail and much internal joinery.
