Stocks and whipping post combined. C17 or earlier, repaired at base of
posts. Oak framing with wrought iron straps and fittings. Stocks with 2
horizontal planks with recesses in their meeting edges, supported above
ground in slots in 2 posts. Orientated almost N-S on axis of Stocks
Road. Taller S part has on E side a hinged iron strap with 2 U-shaped
curves to hold the RH wrist higher or lower. There was probably a
corresponding strap on the W side formerly. Iron plates reinforce the
post which has chamfered arises and a shaped top. Similar plates and
shaped top to shorter N post. The heavy iron strap continuous over the
upper moveable plank has cranked ends and a remaining staple for
securing it in closed position at S end. (RCHM (1911) 31 No.4).
