House, now 3 dwellings. c.1910. Attributed to M.H. Baillie Scott.
Roughcast brick with some applied timbers. Tiled roof. Arts and Crafts
Style. Half H on plan with former stable building to rear forming an
enclosed courtyard. Neo-Medieval plan: open hall with 2 cross wings.
Garden front: hall with flanking gabled wings. Entrance to right of
centre with strap hinged door. To left end of hall is a full height
canted bay, tall timber mullion and transom casements with leaded panes,
semi-octagonal roof. To right a 4 light casement below eaves and a 2
light dormer. Roof hipped at ends of main range. Wings have ground floor
French windows and first floor 6 light mullion and transom casements.
Left return: 3 gables that to centre projecting with tall stacks
between. 3 light mullioned casements, central entrance, flanking ground
floor canted bays. Right return: 3 gables, 2 towards front projecting
with an intermediate stack. 1 storey loggia towards garden is a later
addition. Entrance front in courtyard, symmetrical with sham timber
framed first floor. Slightly projecting gabled entrance bay to centre. 4
centred entrance arch over double doors. 3 light casement in gable.
Flanking 6 light mullioned casements. Central stack with a cornice.
Cross wings have 2 and 3 light casements, that to right with an 8 light
mullion and transom stair window. 2 small gables on these side
elevations before roof is hipped down to a lower ridge over carriageway
openings, one with timber bracing, linking to former stable range. 1
storey with outer central entrance in lean-to, flanking extruded stacks.
3 hipped dormers. Hipped roof with catslide to left. Interior: 2 bay
open hall has timber framing. Braced queen strut and crown post trusses.
4 centred heads to openings, iron strap hinges to doors. The ingenious
planning and attractive detailing of this house are characteristic of
Baillie Scott.
