House, now a shop and a house. Early C16 hall house with 2
crosswings, hall largely rebuilt in C19 when middle and N part of
street front cased in brick. Timber frame largely cased in grey
gault brick but S wing roughcast with weatherboarding in S flank
and exposed timbers in carriageway. Steep red tile roofs. 2-
storeys and attics H plan house facing E with wider and deeper,
gabled N cross wing and smaller S crossing jettied to front and
rear with a shop and a tapered carriageway to yard running
through its Ground floor. Street front has a moulded bargeboard
and 3-light tall casement window with moulded corbelled sill to
upper part of S crosswing. Heavy arch-braced entrance to
carriageway and brackets to each end of jetty. Small shopfront
with fascia to left. The rest of the front in brick has 2 upper
windows to centre and 2 to gabled N wing with pointed attic
window in apex and wavy pierced bargeboard. Recessed sash
windows with 6/6 panes under gauged arches. Door into upper end
of hall with triple sash window to left. 2 sash windows to
Ground floor of N wing. Brick floorband and plinth. Battened
door with rectangular fanlight in wooden surround with fluted
pilasters and flat hood on shaped and pierced brackets. 3 tall
octagonal brick shafts to central chimney to middle, backing onto
carriageway. Plain large square central chimney in N wing. Low
rear eaves suggest the hall range was single-storey. In E wall
of N wing exposed internal timbers with low headed doorway,
formerly to cellar, to S of normal height doorway. Between them
2 4-centred blocked shop windows. Function of room probably
changed when central chimney -built and fireplace provided with 4-
centred brick opening plastered to resemble stone. Ovolo moulded
twin beams in same room. Heavy flat joists in NW room. 3-
centred fireplace in room above apparently added to earlier
