Boyne House
II
Villa now college boarding house. c1830-40 with later
additions and alterations. Stucco over brick and hipped slate
roof, gault brick ridge and end stacks. Double depth plan with
central hallway.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and attic, 5 first-floor windows with
single-storey service wing to right side. Stucco detailing
includes plinth, quoins; moulded first-floor sill band; tooled
architraves to first-floor windows with cornices on consoles;
console brackets to wide eaves. Ground floor has tall 1/1
sashes; first floor has central tripartite window with 6/6
between 2/2 sashes, otherwise 6/6 sashes. Attic has C20
multi-pane windows. Central entrance a 5 fielded-panel door
with side-lights and overlight. Left return has 2 + 10
first-floor window range. Stucco detailing as main facade.
Ground floor has 6/6 sashes; first floor has pairs of 2/2
sashes with round-arched heads. Rear has round-arched
staircase window.
INTERIOR: retains openwork staircase with alternate stick and
embellished iron balusters and lion's paw foot. Coalbrookdale
tile floor to hall; cavetto-moulded and egg-and-dart cornices,
moulded cornice with lilies; fireplaces in marble and slate.
Otherwise not inspected.
HISTORICAL NOTE: reputed to have been a private house before
acquired as boarding houses c1840-50.
