Inn and house, now inn. C17, with later alterations and
additions including range to right c1820-50 and those
c1880-1900 and mid-late C20. Main (left) range: timber-framed
and rendered with pseudo timbering applied on first floor,
renewed artificial slate roof, with one off-ridge brick stack
to front and brick stack to rear; range to right is stucco
over brick with concealed roof and renewed left brick stack.
EXTERIOR: main range: two and a half storeys, 2 dormer windows
(one gabled) with casements; range to right of 3 storeys, 2
first-floor windows. Left range: first floor in 2 distinct
parts, the left side has 8/8 sash and modest false timbering,
right side has renewed casement window and close studded false
timbering. High parapet partly conceals attic dormers with
casement windows. Range to right has 6/6 sashes to ground and
first floors, taller to first floor, all in plain reveals and
with sills; low coped parapet. Ground floor: continuous late
C19-style shop front on in 3 arcaded sections, repeated in 3
similar sections to left return. Entrances to far right and
off-centre right are panelled doors. 2-storey return extension
with three 8/8 sashes on first floor and skylight.
INTERIOR: 1983 List describes considerable portions of the
earlier building with heavy beams and a number of studs and
posts. The lower 2-storey extension to north-east appears to
have a lath and plaster flue to its (later) brick chimney.
Occupies a corner site with Grosvenor Street. Together with
Nos 54 and 331 (qqv), the C17 fabric is the best-known
pre-Regency domestic survival within the boundaries of the
early town.
