The Gordon Lamp
Lamp post. 1887 for gas, adapted for electricity 1899-1900. Subscribed for by residents of Montpellier (1885) who wished to embellish the neighbourhood and as a memorial to General Gordon (see commemorative tablet added in 1933 by the Scottish Society). Granite base supplied by Fraser and Son of Aberdeen at a cost of £200.
Polished grey granite octagonal and moulded plinth and red granite drum with incised pilasters and white marble Corinthian capitals. The lamp post itself is now a tall fluted iron shaft supported by three putti with torches and enriched by lotus and other motifs; capital surmounted by three branches with enriched scrolled filling and pendant lamps; further scrolled enrichments forming finials.
Tablet notes: 'In memory of Major-General Charles George Gordon CBRE 1833-1885.'
An outstanding example of late C19 street furniture of this type.
