Description

SHEEPWASH SOUTH STREET, (west side),
SS 40 NE
Sheepwash
7/97 Lakes Cottage and Lukes
-
21.2.77
II
GV
Pair of houses. Not necessarily of the same build but probably dating sometime from
mid C17 to early C18. With C18 and C19 additions. Rendered cob and rubble walls.
Gable-ended thatch roof. 4 brick stacks - 1 at each end and 2 axial.
Plan: each cottage was probably initially of 2-room plan but Lukes to the right has
appropriated the right-hand ground floor room of Lakes Cottage. Probably C18 dairy
wing behind right-hand room of Lukes and C19 wing at rear of Lakes Cottage. C19
lean-to between the wings.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Lakes Cottage to left has asymmetrical 3-window front of mid
C19 9-pane sashes on 1st floor and early C19 12-pane sashes below with C19 panelled
and glazed door at centre under gabled doorhood. Lukes has asymmetrical 4-window
front of late C19 and early C20 2 and 3-light casements with C19 panelled and glazed
door to left of centre under similar doorhood.
Interior: neither cottage exhibited early features but some may well survive under
later modernisations. Roof structure is unlikely to be earlier than later C18 and
consists of rough straight principals.
