Description

CULMSTOCK THE CLEEVE, Culmstock
ST 11 SW
10/45 Collets
-
GV II
Cottage, formerly 2 or 3 cottages. Probably C18, maybe earlier. Plastered cob on
stone rubble footings; stone rubble stacks topped with C19 brick; corrugated iron
roof, formerly thatch.
Plan: apparently a 4-room plan house built down a gentle slope facing west. It
seems to be made up from 2 or 3 former cottages but since no internal inspection was
available at the time of this survey it is not possible to describe its internal
layout or historic development. The only stacks noticed are end stacks but at least
one more is suspected but now disused. 2 storeys.
Exterior: irregular 4-window front of C20 casements with glazing bars but a couple
are earlier and contain rectangular panes of leaded glass. The 3 front doorways all
contain C20 plank doors. The roof over the right end unit is lower than the rest
suggesting that this end is of a different date to the rest. It is gable-ended.
The rest is tall and steeply pitched and hipped to left.
Interior: was not available for inspection at the time of this survey.
