BAMPTON
MILL HEAD, Bampton
Nos 5 and 6

GV
II

Cottage. C17 or earlier, extended in the C18. Stone rubble with some cob to the
first floor ; asbestos slate roof, gabled at ends ; right end projecting stack with
set-offs and a stone shaft, rear left lateral stack, left end stack, lateral stack to
rear wing which has a half-hipped roof.
Plan: T plan, the main range single depth, 3 rooms wide with an entrance to right of
centre into a stair hall, narrow rear service room probably post-dates the main
range, rear left wing at right angles to the main range.
Exterior: Asymmetrical 4 window front with front door to right of centre and
additional front door to left. Fenestration of 2 and 3-light casements with glazing
bars.
Interior: C17 features survive in both right hand rooms including a chamfered scroll
stopped cross beam and a chamfered lintel to the lateral stack. C18 joinery suggests
that the rear wing and service rooms are C18.
Roof: 2 designs of trusses, possible evidence of sooting on one type with trenched
purlins, the others have cambered collars.
Forms a group with the Retreat and Manor Mill.
