Farmbuildings of planned C19 farmyard, the buildings may originally have served Court
Green as well as Capitol Farm. Erected for the Bishop's Nympton estate, owner
William Keates, in 1877 (datestone). Stone rubble with red brick dressings and gable-
ended slate roofs.
Plan: H plan forming 2 small yards, the south yard opening on to the village green,
the north yard behind with access from a farm lane at the west. 2 parallel ranges on
a north/south axis, a threshing barn range to the west with a horse engine house
projecting into the north yard; a shippon range to the east forming the boundary of
the garden of Capitol Farmhouse. Between these ranges and dividing the north and
south yards, is an open fronted cartshed facing south with a doorway through it
between the 2 yards.
Exterior: The threshing barn range to the west has 2 pairs of double threshing doors
on the west elevation, the doorways with cheeks, 2 loft doors and a window. On the
east elevation (facing into the south yard) a pair of double threshing doors with a
slate pent roof and a C20 concrete block addition. Facing into the north yard there
is a horse engine house with a canted north end and, to the right, a pair of double
doors and a flight of external stone steps up to a loft door with a smaller doorway
on the ground floor to the right. An open-fronted cartshed adjoins the threshing
barn range at the north end. The shippon range has 3 doorways facing into the south
yard and 2 loft doors and a window. Facing the north yard there is a pair of double
doors to the right with 2 loft doors. The cartshed range in the centre is open-
fronted with 2 bays facing into the south yard and a doorway into the north yard at
the right end.
A late C19 estate planned farmyard with relatively little alteration. Group value
with the farmhouse and in a prominent position facing the village green.
