Description

SLAPTON
SX8245 BROOK STREET
11/83 SLAPTON
Maple Cottage

GV II

House divided into 2 cottages and reunited into one house. Probably C17
remodelled in circa C19 and C20. Rendered stone rubble. Steeply-pitched
corrugated asbestos sheet roof with gabled ends. Internal gable end stacks
with short shafts, the right hand with small yellow clay pot, the left hind
stack heightened in brick and with slate-on-edge cowl.
Plan: Probably originally a small 2 room plan house with a central cross-
passage, the lower left hand room was probably the kitchen. It was possibly
in the C19 that the eaves were raised, the house divided into two cottages
and a staircase inserted into the passage, but it has since been reunited
into one house. There might be an outshut at the back.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical front. Two Cl9 2-light casements on
first floor with glazing bars, on the ground floor C19 2-light casement to
right and C19 3-light casements to left with glazing bars and C20 window to
right of centre probably in blocked doorway. Doorway to left of centre with
circa late C19 glazed and flush panel door.
Interior: Not inspected but closely-spaced cross-beams are visible in both
ground floor rooms.
