Description

BIGBURY BIGBURY GREEN
SX 64 NE
(south east side)
5/14 Cleave Cottage and Olde
Poste

GV II

OS map shows Post Office on this site. Two cottages in isolated unit. C18.
Rendered, thatched roof. Two units, formerly each with central doorway, stepped
to ground slope, and with ridge line sloping down; continuous lean-to at back
not of special interest, except swept down roof to Olde Poste. Two storeys, 2 +
2 windows, all small 2-light glazing bar casements, but with extra casement to
ground floor centre of Cleave Cottage, presumed position of original doorway;
upper lights to slight eyebrow dormers. To left in Cleave Cottage a wide plank
door in added lean-to porch, and to Olde Poste a C20 door under thatched hood.
Left gable is coped, and this wall, to the road, is stepped, possibly denoting
an earlier stack; stack to ridge at party wall, and gable stack to right.
Interior of Cleave Cottage retains two transverse chamfered beams and exposed
ceiling joists, and has solid wood stair; roof structure probably C18. Interior
of Olde Poste not accessible; this half formerly included the Post Office, and
is still so indicated on the OS map.
