Description

TL 2224 STEVENAGE GUNNELS WOOD ROAD

3/10004 John Lewis Warehouse

II

Warehouse. 1963. Yorke, Rosenberg and Mardall in collaboration with the engineer Felix Candela. Reinforced concrete; board-marked. Some brick. Rectangular. Roofed by rows of linked, inverted pyramids, each supported at the apex by a square concrete pier and each inclined upward on the north side to admit north light, creating a serrated roof profile. Open bays for loading to south eastern end, showing unpainted board-marked concrete undersides of vaults; grey brick enclosing remaining bays, with large loading doors. Inside the building the vaults are exposed, but painted. Interesting for its virtuoso shell concrete roof.
