Chipping Sodbury Union Workhouse, now offices. Said to date from 1835-6, by
Scott and Moffatt. Coursed squared rubble with freestone dressings and quoins;
slate roofs; ashlar stacks with cornice. In a Tudor Gothic style, with a
front office and service range and a rear residential range. Front range.
Central 2 storey gatehouse surmounted by a coped gable with moulded kneelers;
4-centred arch and chamfered doorcase under a dripmould, single casement above.
2 single storey 5 bay wings flank the arch, the centre bay is slightly advanced
and has a coped gable and a 3-light cross window. To the left are 2 gabled
single storey rooms: 2- and 3-light cross windows and projecting gabled centre
section. Rear range. 2 storeys. 2:5:3:5:2 bays. Single, 2- and 3-light
cross windows with chamfered mullions and surrounds. End bays project as gabled
wings with lateral stacks. Centre 3 bays are slightly advanced: 2 storeys and
attics in gabled dormers with kneelers; two 2 storey canted bays with parapet.
Central C20 porch; plank doors to side wings.
