Former gatehouse of Devonport Prison. 1849 (Pevsner). Plymouth
limestone rubble with limestone dressings of a lighter colour;
steep dry slate roofs plus embattled tower with machicolations
and octagonal corner turret; stone axial and lateral stacks
with tall brick shafts with oversailing courses.
PLAN: long irregular overall E-shaped plan with cross wings to
front. Domestic Gothic style.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys with 1st floor partly in roof space;
irregular gabled front. Stone mullioned windows: the principal
windows with trefoil-headed lights, other windows with
round-arched lights. Principal features of front include from
left: 3-light window to ground floor; 2-storey porch; attached
wider wing; then a symmetrical 3-bay arrangement with a
central 3-storey tower; then another cross wing; then an
irregular grouping of openings including a doorway on the
right and at far right an unequal pair of linked cross wings.
The 3 principal cross wings each have 3 or 4 lights over a
ground-floor canted window with a hipped roof; the next to far
right cross wing has 2 lights over 3 lights; the bays flanking
the tower have 2 lights over 4 lights. Tower has pair of
paired lights to upper stage with string and pair of lights
below and a hipped canted ground-floor projection. Otherwise
paired or single lights and squat 2-centred arched doorways.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
A fine building in a restrained Gothic style.
