Description

SJ 37 SE SHOTWICK PARK CP LODGE LANE
(West Side)

4/55 Barn 70m north-east of
Shotwicklodge Farmhouse

GV II

Former barn, now shippon and straw loft: probably late. C16 with late C19 and C20
alterations. Timber framed with later brick infill in ground storey. Weather-boarded
above. Corrugated iron roof. Long rectangular plan of 2 storeys and 7 bays. The
walls are close studded and have large passing braces surviving in parts, small
angle braces visible inside. The main posts stand on stone pads and a stone plinth
survives in one gable end. Numerous later openings inserted in ground storey.
Wooden square pitch hole doors with strap hinges in upper storey.
Interior: roof trusses have arch braced tiebeam, with two large diagonal struts
and wind brace trenched purlins.

A very large barn, in which the weather boarding and passing braces are unusual,
this far north in Cheshire.
