Milestone. Mid C18 on Turnpike Road from London to Exeter. Sandstone with cast iron plate.Block with rounded top, 400 mm wide and 300 mm deep, now half sunk into road embankment and top half only of attached plate visible; reads WINCANTON 8 HINDON 6. The stone is set high in the embankment, above a road sign to 'local services' and must have been reset at the time of road widening.
