Cottage, 1873, by John Douglas, for 3rd Marquis and 1st Duke of
Westminster. A picturesque asymmetrical design with oak framed walls
on projecting sandstone plinth. 1½ storeys. Red tile roofs; shaped
brick chimneys; tile-hung gables with shaped bargeboards. Shaped oak
mullioned and transomed windows with leaded lights in iron casements.
Arched oak porch under catslide roof. Oak bay to parlour with square
oriel in bracketed projecting gable of main bedroom above. Carved
spandrels to porch arch, carved bressumers and tie beams. Painted
floral pargetting under main first floor windows. Framed and boarded
oak door with ornate wrought ring handle.
Interior: Newel staircase with shaped flat balusters, 6 panel-doors.
The cottage shows John Douglas as a pioneer in the new vernacular
movement, working with confidence and originality. (Pevsner and
