Monument to HWF Bolckow, dated 1881 by DW Stevenson, sculptor, and Sir John Steell, founder (Edinburgh). The monument comprises a red granite pedestal with a signed bronze figure; the standing male figure wearing a frock-coat holds the Charter of Incorporation of Middlesbrough. There are two chamfered steps below the pedestal. The north-west face of the die and plinth are inscribed: ‘H.W.F. BOLCKOW’, and ‘ERECTED 1881’. A bronze tablet on the south-east face of the die has raised lettering: ‘THIS STATUE WAS UNVEILED BY LORD FREDERICK CAVENDISH, ON THE 6TH OCTOBER, 1881’. Originally erected outside the Middlesbrough Royal Exchange in Marton Road, it was moved to Albert Park in 1925 and in 1986 moved here on the site of Royal Exchange. HWF Bolckow was the co-founder of Middlesbrough's iron industry in 1840.
