Description

MERTON MERTON
SS 5212
22/152 Village stores and Malt Scoop Inn
-
GV II

Shop with adjoining house and inn attached to it. May contain some C17 fabric but
much extended in C18 and C19 and remodelled in C20. Thatch roof hipped to front wing
of inn otherwise gabled. The inn has 2 brick axial stacks, one large and probably
the earlier, and a projecting rendered rubble stack at its right gable end with brick
shaft. The house adjoining the shop has a brick stack at its left gable end.
Plan: The various sections form a T-shaped plan. The main range of the inn is
probably the earliest part of the building although it exhibits few dateable
features, and has a 3-room plan somewhat altered. The wing added in front of its
left-hand end is likely to be an C18 addition. Adjoining that wing and forming a
parallel one is the shop which is of one storey and quite likely dates only to the
C19. Set back from it and extending to the left is a probably C18 2-room plan
cottage, its left-hand room heated by an end stack.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Both buildings are 1-shaped with parallel projecting wings at
the front. The inn to the right has an asymmetrical 2 window front of C20 casements
- 2-light on the first floor and 3-light on the ground floor of its main range. C19
panelled and glazed door to left under late C19 gabled doorhood on wooden brackets.
Projecting from the left end is the wing which has one window on each floor, the
first floor one below a small gable. Plank door to their left. A small C19
outbuilding with hipped slate roof projects from the right end of the inn. Parallel
to its thatched wing is the shop which is single storey with a large C20 bay window
on its end wall. On its inner face is a central doorway with double part-glazed
doors under a similar doorhood to the inn. The cottage to the left and recessed from
the shop has a symmetrical 3 window front of early C19 12-pane sashes and a central
C19 panelled and part-glazed door with similar hood above it.
Interior of Inn exhibits no early features but some may be concealed.
