Pair of mill-workers' cottages, c 1845, probably by Weightman & Hadfield. Coursed rubble limestone with gritstone dressings and vermiculated quoins. Welsh slate roof with wooden bargeboards and finials. Quadruple stone stack rising from the eaves between two pitched roofs. Two storeys. Twin gabled south elevation. The ground floor has two three-light chamfered mullion windows. The first floor has two similar two-light windows and two C20 windows, and there is a single light window in each gable. None of the windows have their original diamond lights. The cottages form part of the mill settlement built to serve Cressbrook Mill. They form part of a symmetrical composition with Nos 40 - 43 and Nos 46 - 49 Middle Row.
