7/109 The Forge and The Old Tannery

Forge with house attached to right. Mid C19, incorporating an earlier building,
probably of mid C18; The Old Tannery is of late C17 origin, with later alterations
and additions. Slatestone rubble. Slate roof, with ridge tiles, hipped to left end
and with half hip to right; front lateral stack to each of the three main builds.
Plan: End block to left, is the Forge, with front lateral stack. Central range of 2-
room plan with front lateral stack and front outshut, with the end block to the right
of C19 forming the Old Tannery. The end block is of one-room plan with a stair hall
and front lateral stack.
Exterior: 2 storeys; front to road has 2-light casement with segmental head at ground
floor in block to left. Central range has 2-light C20 casement in former door
opening in the outshut and blocked first floor window with timber lintel to right of
external stack. Straight joint to end block which has a tall 8-pane stair light. At
the left side, C19 entry to forge, with central door and horizontal sliding sash to
right and left, 16-pane sashes with segmental heads. First floor has 2 C20
replacement horizontal sashes, also with segmental heads. The rear of the Forge has
2 C20 windows at first floor, and 2 C20 doors at ground floor. Formerly had a 2-
storey attached range, now removed.
The right side of the Old Tannery has ground floor 4-pane sash with segmental head,
first floor two 4-pane sashes with cambered heads. Slightly set back to right, a 2-
storey addition with stack at the right side. The rear of the Old Tannery has the
C19 addition to left, with ground floor .16-pane sash and 6-panelled door set in
recess; two 20-pane sashes at first floor. Central range has 3 windows at first
floor, a 3-light casement with L hinges, 6-pane sash and 2-light C20 casement.
Ground floor has 3-light casement with L hinges (formerly door to passage, and single
storey rear unheated range with door and 3 C20 casements).
Interior: The central range (of the Old Tannery) was originally a 2-room house with
central passage. Slate floors remain.
