Mechanics Institute, 1846, now Public Library. Sandstone ashlar,
hipped slate roof. Rectangular plan 3x8 bays, 2 storeys, in simple
classical style. Symmetrical facade with clasping pilasters, 1st floor
sill band, moulded cornice, plain parapet, Tuscan doorcase, 2 windows at
ground floor and 3 taller windows above (all with altered glazing).
Right side wall matches front but windows are sashed and there is a pilaster
between the 6th and 7th bays, a door at ground floor beyond this.
Interior altered. History: Mechanics Institute founded 1839, this
building erected by some of the principal manufacturers of the neighbourhood
at cost of £1,300 and presented to the members, opened July 1846.
