II
Remains of vertical lift on former Grand Western Canal. 1831-8 by James Green, engineer to the Canal Company. Squared and coursed green sandstone, 3 retaining walls about 5-6m high, enclosing area about 9m square, aqueduct (qv) above to south, 2 blind segmental headed arches on west side and presumably also on east side but obscured by ivy at time of resurvey (January 1985), with projecting section of cast iron on east side. Walls raked down and partially demolished at north-east end. This canal lift was designed to raise tub boats 24 feet from the canal to aqueduct above. Of the 7 lifts constructed on the canal, this is the best preserved and was known as "The Nynehead Lift".Forms part of a goodgroup of canal structures. Harris,Grand Western Canal,1973).
