Formerly known as: Green Dragon Inn ROMAN ROAD.
Public house. c1500, c1600, C18, C19, C20. Timber-framed,
rendered, some exposed timber-framing, also red brick, roof of
old peg tiles and C20 clay tiles. Large reduced central stack
and smaller stacks on end elevations. H-plan, large W
cross-wing and small one at E end. Rear C19 and C20 additions.
EXTERIOR: 2 storey and partial attics. N front elevation.
Roofs on 3 levels, rising from E to W, expressing progressive
expansion in C16 and C17 from earliest E cross-wing to hall,
divided and raised to 2 storeys and attic and C17 2 storey and
attic W cross-wing. Central 2-window range, first floor, two
C18 sash windows with glazing bars, moulded architraves, one
4x4 panes, one 3x4 panes, ground floor C19 doorway at E end
with simple weather hood on shaped brackets, door has 4
panels, upper 2 glazed, lower 2 with flush bead-moulded
panels. To W, flat roofed C19 addition with 2 windows, similar
to those above, upper sashes of 4x2 panes, lower sashes, now 2
panes, W face of addition, door similar to one at E heavy
stack on roof apex, towards W end, C17 but reduced and top
rebuilt. E cross-wing, ground floor C19 5-cant ground floor
bay window, 3 cants have a sash window with bead moulded
architrave, glazing bars, 3x4 panes. First floor, one similar
sash window of 4x4 panes. W cross-wing has exposed
timber-frame, partly original (heavy jowled corner posts with
peg holes for braces) part restored, simple vertical studding
and projecting tie-beam. Ground floor, C20 timber-framed
porch, inner door C20, in Tudor style with upper glazed panel
and 3 lower recessed panels - to E, attached pentice roof,
within, C20 frieze window of 3 metal casements. First floor,
C20 3-light casement window with leaded panes. Projecting
gable with C20 triple casement with glazing bars, 6x3 panes.
Rear, S elevation, irregular with older building above later
work. E cross-wing flush with central range and a first floor
C19 sash window with glazing bars, 3x4 panes. W wing projects
with lower 2 storey C19 brick continuation having a
first-floor C20 French window. Second C19 brick rear 2-storey
addition in line with principal stack. Timber-framed stair
projection immediately to W, rises to attic, roof now flat,
simple 2-light casement window with glazing bars, 2x3 panes at
top level. Later single storey projection - at W, C20 with
simple door with upper leaded glazing and lower boarded panel,
long 5-casement segment headed window with leaded panes. 3
similar casement windows, 2 of 2x2 panes and one double, of
4x2 panes. At E end of range, C19 long gabled block,
projecting to S enclosing inner court that has a lean-to
conservatory roof, covering 2 windows and 2 doorways. E end
elevation plain, cross-wing roof hipped at rear, small
external C19 stack. C19 yellow brick rear addition projects
slightly to E with corrugated asbestos roof, parapet, blocked
segment headed window in projecting N gable end. W end
elevation, C17 cross-wing has small external stack, rebuilt in
C20, ground floor now brick with 5-light casement window with
leaded panes and a narrow 2-light casement window at N end.
C20 porch of N front continues flush with fixed window with
leaded panes. At S end, C19 brick addition, simple with
external stack and small 2-light ground floor casement window.
C20 flat roofed extension with simple 2-light casement window
projects deeply to W.
INTERIOR: E cross-wing. Ground floor has inner front jetty
bressumer now boxed in - wall removed below, also central
truss of 2-bayed structure with bracket braces to binding
joist. Above, on first floor, are central jowled posts and
braces to tie-beam, also display arched bracing typical of
high end cross-wings towards site of original open hall to W.
Central crown-post in roof with simple curved 2-way bracing.
Central range, ground floor inserted ceiling with lamb's
tongue chamfer stops. Most fireplaces of central stack are
blocked or renewed. First floor, original hall wall plate at
front behind first-floor windows with edge-halved and bridled
scarf joint. W side of principal stack has 4-centred arched
fireplace with arch chamfer stopped high on jambs. Rear stair
projection has a c1600 2-light mullioned window with ovolo
mouldings, now blocked. W cross-wing first floor shows
internal tension bracing on front elevation, similar bracing
on central partition for 2 bays. Also a blocked window
aperture on W wall. The building phases are (1) Medieval open
hall house of c1500, with E high end cross-wing surviving. (2)
c1600, hall walls raised, first floor and large stack inserted
(probably on site of cross-passage). Stair tower built to
serve attic space as well as first floor. (3) Contemporary, or
a little later, large new cross-wing at W end with projection
display gable. (4) C19 refurbishment of front (as an inn) with
rear E stable block added and 2 rear wings at centre and W
ends. (5) C20 rear ground floor addition and front porch with
pentice. Note RCHM in which the stair window is noted together
with the existence of 6 grouped diagonal shafts on the central
stack (now gone).
