Barn and shippon range; now stable and store. Probably late
C16, enlarged and altered in C17 and later. Coursed squared
sandstone rubble, stone slate roof.
Rectangular 5-bay plan on east-west axis, plus added stable at
west end. An impressively long stone range with opposed waggon
entrances in the 3rd bay, some slit breathers to the right of
this, 4 square-headed doorways to the right-hand half and 2
square loading doors above these; and, at the left end, a
square headed doorway to the added stable and a recent
buttress at the junction.
The principal features of interest are in the INTERIOR, which
has 2 full cruck trusses defining the 4th bay. The first of
these (forming the right-hand side of the central threshing
area) appears to have been the former west gable end of the
building: the blades have vacant mortices of a former sill and
a former rail, the outer ends of a severed tie-beam, and a
collar and yoke both with stave sockets in the soffits, and
the blades are weathered on the west face.
The second cruck truss has more strongly curved blades, short
cruck-ties, a tie-beam with post spurs, and a yoke. Both
trusses have dorsals, and carry chamfered purlins, that on the
north side with an up-windbrace to the west truss and the
vacant mortice of a former downbrace.
The heads of former wall-posts attached to the north side of
both trusses, and the wall-plate between them with mortices
and peg-holes of former intermediate posts, show that the wall
was formerly timber-framed.
The 2-bay west end has a C17 principal-rafter roof truss, and
chamfered purlins; the east end has a C19 truss and purlins.
Forms a group with Felton's Farmhouse approx 20m south (qv).
