ILFRACOMBE
TORRS PARK (South side)
No 41 (The Regency)

(Formerly listed as Grey Gables)

GV
II

Large detached house, a residential home at time of listing. Probably 1880 by WC Oliver of Barnstaple; late C20 addition on left side. Gothic style.

MATERIALS: cream brick with dressings of red brick and stone. Slated roof with red crested ridge tiles and terracotta finials. Red brick chimney on south side.

EXTERIOR: two storeys with semi basement and garret. Asymmetrical front with three-storeyed gabled projection off-centre to left having mock timber-framing in the gable. To right of this the entrance porch with carved pointed arch springing from thick columns with carved capitals; Gothic open work balustrade on top. Ground storey windows have cinquefoil transom lights with coloured glass. Second storey window of projection has three lights with pointed arches springing from columns between the lights; sashes and transom lights filled with coloured glass.

Rear elevation (visible from churchyard and Langleigh Road) has off-centre canted bay window with wooden top storey having a timber-framed gable and bargeboards. Side elevations have pairs of similar gables.

INTERIOR not inspected.

An elevation very similar to this for a detached house in Torrs Park was submitted to the Board by WC Oliver in April 1880. It was referred back but may have been revised and approved soon after. Southcliffe and Wilderbrook Nursing Home Annexe (not included) of 1882 are less vigorous but in the same style.
