Pedestal with statue of Mercury. c1700 by Jan van Nost.
Erected as part of a French style garden designed by Royal
Gardeners, London and Wise, for Thomas Coke of Melbourne Hall.
Stone and lead. Panelled pedestal with moulded base and cornice
on stepped square plinth surmounted by lead statue of Mercury in
flight. The figure has his right arm held high and is holding
his winged rod with intertwined serpents in his left hand. His
helmet and ankles are winged and he stands on the forehead of a
wind blowing cherub. Included in the Derbyshire Historic
Gardens Register at Grade I. See item 6/63 for sources.
