Row of 5 small town houses. c.1835, altered. Red brick in
Flemish bond (but No 49 roughcast and painted white, No 51
painted red and Nos 48 and 52 rebuilt), with sandstone
dressings and slate roof (replaced with concrete tiles at
No.49). Double-depth plan, each house single-fronted, with
back extensions (separate at No.48, coupled at the others),
and through-lobbies between Nos.48 and 49, and Nos.50 and 51
(the latter originally serving No.52 also, by a passage along
the rear of No.51). Two storeys over cellars, each house 2
bays, Nos.50 to 52 stepped up; with 1st-floor sill-band, plain
frieze and moulded gutter cornice (stepped up between Nos.49
and 50). The doorways of Nos.48 and 49, and of Nos.50 and 51,
are at the outer ends of these pairs, but those of Nos.49 and
50 are coupled at the junction of the pairs, and the doorway
of No.52 is coupled to that of No.51; the first 3 have
round-headed architraves with set-in Tuscan quarter columns,
plain lintels, and semicircular fanlights with convex moulded
surrounds, and the last 2 are square-headed with coupled
moulded architraves, cornices on consoles which have guttae,
and rectangular overlights; all with 5-panel doors except
No.48 (altered). Each house has one window at ground floor and
2 above, sashed without glazing bars at Nos.51 and 52 but
otherwise altered, all with raised sills, and wedge lintels
except at Nos.48 and 49; cellar windows of Nos.48 and 49
altered, the others sashed with glazing bars, all protected by
gratings. Large linear multi-flue common chimney stacks at the
junctions.
Rear and INTERIORS not inspected. History: deeds of No.50
record conveyance of building plot from Edward Stanley (1st
part - Lord Stanley, later Earl of Derby) and William
Tomlinson (2nd part - leather manufacturer with premises to
south-east of this street) to Isaac Wilcockson (3rd part) and
Lawrence Dobson (4th part), the former purchaser the
proprietor of the Preston Chronicle at that time and the
latter a printer and bookseller who was father of the next
proprietor of that newspaper. The item is part of a formerly
complete set of late Georgian lower-middle class town houses
in this street.
