723-1/9/105 Road bridge over London to Norwich
railway line

II

Road bridge over railway. 1840. For Eastern Counties Railway
Co. Stock bricks, colour various, yellow, red and blue, in
English bond. Aligned N-S, with C20 steel footbridge abutting
to W. Supported over cutting on 6 brick piers, with a semi-
elliptical arch between the 2 middle piers, and semicircular
arches between the others. The 2 outer piers on each side have
apertures through them, each with a semicircular arch; in the
inner pier on each side this aperture has been closed with
brick later. Weathered brick imposts. On each side are 8
projecting rectangular brick panels, over the piers and
abutments. The E side has a brick parapet approximately 1.50m
above the tarmac road. On the W side the parapet has been
taken down to the level of the footbridge, approximately 0.60m
above the tarmac, and finished with concrete coping blocks
with exposed aggregate, on which is mounted a galvanised iron
railing comprising cast stanchions and 2 tubular rails. The
road takes its name from this bridge.
