House, now a nursing home. Mid-C19 and C20. Yellow brick,
hipped slated roofs. H-plan, with additions particularly round
service court to NW.
EXTERIOR: Front, E elevation, projecting wings to N and S have
full height 3-cant projecting bays, S 2 storey and N 3 storey
with central 3 bay range. Whole frontage has parapet, cornice
with stone modillions or (S wing) plain triglyphs. An open
stucco Tuscan portico with coupled columns spans the central
range. N wing all 9 windows have stuccoed surrounds, now
fitted with C20 horizontally pivoted casement windows, with
glazing bars, ground and first floors of 3x4 panes and second
floor of 3x2 panes. Central range, ground floor central
doorway with stuccoed cornice on console brackets, door C20, 6
fielded panels, each sub-divided. Flanking triple sash
windows. First floor central bay slightly recessed. 3
pedimented windows, outer have triangular pediments, centre
segment headed. Pediments linked by stucco aprons to those on
second floor. First floor window C20 plain horizontally
pivoted casements, second floor similar with glazing bars, 3x2
panes. S wing, ground floor, 3 round headed windows, moulded
stucco heads with keystones, moulded linking imposts and
string course, plain sash windows (round heads). First floor,
3 windows with wide moulded architraves and pediments on
console brackets, central one segment headed, outer ones
triangular pediments, windows C20 horizontally pivoted
casements, a moulded string course at sill level. S, garden
elevation, 2 storey, in similar style to S wing of E
elevation, full height 3 cant bay window towards W end, 3
window range to E of bay. Ground floor, 6 round headed deep
windows with plain sashes, first floor, 6 windows with wide
architraves and pediments on console brackets, central window
of bay projection has segment headed pediment. Ogee canopy
spans whole frontage and is taken round to W side, cast-iron
supports have arched heads with circle and quatrefoil
decoration. W elevation, 2 broad projecting wings with narrow
central range enclosing stair. S wing, 2 bays with windows on
ground and first floors similar to S elevation. Ground floor
windows altered, one blocked and one now with French window
having upper glazing and lower panel. Central recessed range,
large first floor `Venetian' stair window in shallow depressed
arch, glazing bars, 2x4,4x4 plus glazed arch, 2x4 panes.
Below, ground floor simple fully glazed projection porch with
C20 fully glazed door. N wing, 3 window range, ground floor
obscured by C19 addition with hipped slated roof, one plain
triple C19 sash window, 3 small windows, (being refurbished at
time of listing) and one simple C20 door. N wing first floor 3
sash windows with glazing bars, 3x2 panes. N service elevation
irregular principal 4 bayed E block, major 2 bayed W block and
minor single bayed unit between 3 stacks, all 3 storeyed but
ground floor obscured to E by original extension with
balustraded parapet mainly concealing hipped roof projecting
at W end and, to W by C20 flat roofed extension, 2 sash
windows with glazing bars, 3x4 panes, also full height tower
addition between. Windows irregular on E block but similar to
those on N wing of E elevation. Central and W units have 3
first floor C20 casements, second floor, three C19 sashes with
glazing bars, 3x2 panes. Central unit, C19 sash window with
covering grille, glazing bars, 3x4 panes. A service/stable
court at NW corner being totally refurbished at time of
listing and not included in this listing.
INTERIOR: central hall has Corinthian columns, panelled beams
and plaster ceiling decoration. A spacious well stair leads
off to W (now mostly blocked off by C20 fire wall at stair
foot). Stair of early C18 style, with open string and
decorative brackets to tread ends, balusters alternately
fluted and twisted. Arcade on first floor landing. Principal
rooms at N and S ends have plaster ceiling decorations.
