Terrace of 5 houses. c1850. Sandstone ashlar with rear walls
of coursed squared rubble, and slate roofs. Double-depth plan
with doorways and staircases to the left and chimney stacks to
the right. 3 full storeys above cellars, with a single bay to
the right of each door, although No.1 also has windows above
the door on the upper floors. The doorways have deep plain
reveals under a simple cornice, and 6-panel doors with
overlights. The windows too have plain reveals and sashes,
though only those in No.9 (with 12 and 9 panes) appear to be
original; all the sashes except for those on the ground and
first floors of No.7 and the second floors of Nos 5 & 7 have
glazing bars. The rear walls of Nos 5, 7 & 9 have tall
rectangular stair windows.
HISTORY: No.1 was the birthplace (in 1869) of Lawrence Binyon,
who wrote the poem 'For the Fallen' ('They shall not grow old
as we that are left grow old...').
