Description

NORTH MOLTON EAST STREET (north side),
SS 7229-7329
18/135 No. 1 (Keys Cottage) and No.2 (The
- Cottage)
GV II
House, now divided. Mid C17, remodelled in the mid to late C19. Rendered, probably
over stone and cob. Gable-ended C20 asbestos-slate roof. Rendered stacks.
Plan: 2-room plan with central entrance leading to passage. External lateral stack
to rear of each room and (probably later) integral end stack to left. Short later
wing to rear of left-hand room and larger later wing to rear of right-hand room.
Remodelled in the C19, when eaves were probably raised. House probably divided at
some time, possibly in the C19 but probably in the C20. 2 storeys.
Exterior: Not quite asymmetrical 4-window front; first-floor C19 2-light wooden
casements and ground-floor C19 4-pane sashes. Roughly-central segmental-arched
entrance, with C20 half-glazed passage door to right and C20 half-glazed door to
left-hand cottage. C20 boarded door (probably inserted to right of right-hand
ground-floor window).
Interior: Left-hand ground-floor room has C17 chamfered cross beam with stepped
runout stops (adzed to take later plaster, since removed). Fireplace to rear with old
wooden lintel. Old floorboards to left-hand first-floor rooms. Roof-space not
inspected but trusses appear to be C17. Interior of right-hand cottage not
inspected.
