Hunting box: c1875 by John Douglas for the Wilbraham family. White
pointed English bond orange brick with red sandstone and terracotta
dressings. Welsh slate roof and brick chimneys with strip pilaster
decoration. Irregular plan. 3-storey, 5-bay west front. The central
3 bays have a 1-storey porch with a ridge parallel to the roof with 2
pairs of lancets with moulded band at impost level and at the right
end is a 3-panelled front door with ornate hinges in a 4-centred
moulded stone arched surround. Central bay behind is also gabled and
lights the stairwell with mullioned and transomed windows contained
within a giant pointed arch and with terracotta detailing in bands and
in the typanum. Right end bay is also gabled and has a chimney up the
centre with strip pilaster decoration. Remaining windows are sashes
with bead-moulded stone lintels. Servants wing and stables to the
left are simpler with ventilators and fleches on the ridge. Garden
front of irregular masses has a pair of gables at the centre above a
canted bay window, and a massive chimney in the corner.
Interior: entry in anteroom with exposed timber framing. Main hall
to the left which contains oak and pine well staircase rising full
height, with turned balusters and column newels. Grained panelling in
the well and forming dado. 3 stained glass galleons reflect the
Wilbraham motto of "Safely into port". Panelled doors have rilled
surrounds. Dining room has C17 style stone fireplace with a plaster
galleon above. Living room has a corner fireplace and plaster
panelled walls of running husks.
