The base of a medieval stone cross, previously sited in
Risbygate Street, now resited in the grounds of the West
Suffolk College of Further Education (not included). C13/C14.
An octagonal moulded stone base with a socket hole which
probably formed the lower part of the Risbygate Cross. This
stood originally in Out Risbygate near the medieval Hospital
of St Peter. The base was later known as the plague stone, and
the hollow was thought to be filled with vinegar for
disinfecting money during epidemics.
