Terrace of 3 town houses, Nos 171 & 173 now a school and
No.175 unoccupied at time of survey (1991); with front garden
walls and gateways. c1850-60, altered. sandstone ashlar, slate
roof. Late Georgian style. Double-depth plan, each house
single-fronted and Nos 171-173 built halls-adjoining, with
large back extensions (those of Nos 171-173 coupled).
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys over cellars, 2+2+2 windows, with a
plinth, raised quoins, plain frieze and moulded cornice with
blocking course. The doorways of Nos 171 & 173 have
architraves of engaged columns with papyrus-leaf capitals,
that at No.175 has a Tuscan pilastered architrave, all with
plain friezes and moulded cornices with blocking courses;
No.171 has a glazed and panelled door, No.173 has C20 glazing
in place of the door, all have overlights. Each has a 2-storey
canted bay with cornices to both levels and segmental-headed
sashed windows, otherwise all the windows have raised sills
and plain reveals and most are sashed without glazing bars,
but those at ground and 1st floors of No.175 are now either
boarded or damaged. Corniced stone chimney at junction of Nos
173 & 175, and at each gable. Pedimental gables at both ends,
containing blank shields. Back extensions of full-height, with
sashed windows, mostly 12-paned.
INTERIOR not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: terraced front gardens with
baffle-entries formed by front walls and inner retaining walls
of coursed squared sandstone, with ramped coping to the front
walls, and 3 pairs of square gate piers with pyramidal caps.
