Cotton weaving mill. Dated 1891 in gable; altered. Rock-faced
sandstone blocks and some ashlar, slate roof with glazed
"north-lights".
PLAN: large rectangular weaving shed filling block between
Heath Street to the north, Cleaver Street to the south and
Swinless Street to the east, with a storeyed warehouse and
engine house at the west end and an office block in front of
the north end of this range.
EXTERIOR: the main range, 2 storeys over basement,
incorporating engine-house at right-angles towards the
right-hand end and boiler house to right of this, 18:3:3
windows in all, has vertical-rectangular windows on both
floors, mostly 9-paned and a cast-iron fire-escape from the
9th window; the single-storey office block (in front of the
1st 8 windows) has 5 windows and a round-headed doorway, a
band and parapet, a downspout to the right of each opening,
and at the right-hand end, canted back slightly, a wagon
doorway with cast-iron lintel lettered "STANLEY MILL". Added
screen wall links corner of this with corner of engine-house.
The 3-window gabled engine-house, of ashlar with raised
rusticated quoins, projects slightly and has at ground floor a
3-bay arcade of tall round-headed arches with imposts and
keystones (a doorway flanked by windows, with altered door and
altered glazing), vertical-rectangular windows at 1st floor, a
cruciform plaque in the gable lettered "18 / STANLEY MILL /
91", and gable coping with kneelers.
The 3-window boiler house to the right, slightly canted back,
has 3 wagon doorways at ground floor with panelled cast-iron
lintels, low segmental-headed windows above these and
vertical-rectangular windows at 1st floor.
Attached to the rear right-hand corner of boiler-house is the
chimney stack, with a square-section plinth to eaves level,
and a tapered circular chimney with moulded base but now
lacking the cornice. The shed has side walls with high
parapets and 25 rain-water hoppers and down-spouts.
Included as a good example of a Burnley weaving mill. Forms
group with associated Stable Block on opposite side of Cleaver
Street (qv).
