Includes: Arkwright Square (Arkwright Cottage and two unnamed
cottages) BUXTON ROAD.
Small group of industrial housing now 8 dwellings including
Corner House, Corner Cottage, Arch Cottage, The Cottage,
Arkwright Cottage, Rose Cottage and 2 un-named houses. Late
C18, altered. Rubble limestone with sandstone dressings;
graduated slate roof with rolled-lead ridges.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys; 5-window range facing Mill Street,
3-window range facing Buxton Road. The houses set around 3
sides of a courtyard. Large quoins; flush sills and plain
lintels; various C20 part-glazed and boarded doors.
Mill Street front: quoins to near-central segmental archway. 2
doorways to left and one to right; 30-pane casements to right
of door and small casement to each floor on left. Buxton Road
front: 3 doorways; 30-pane casement to ground floor of
Arkwright Cottage on left otherwise 3-light and 2-light
casements with glazing bars. Rebuilt facade to unnamed house
on right, the openings without glazing. Hipped angle to the
roof; brick ridge stacks and end stacks with coved ashlar
cornices.
Corner House adjoins rear of Corner Cottage and is taller:
stable-type door and casements with glazing bars; red tile
roof with brick end stack having coved cornice.
Rose Cottage is to rear of the yard: door to left of 3
casements to each floor in the style of horizontally-sliding
sashes.
