Villa, now Burnley Borough Council hostel. Mid C19, in 2 or 3
builds. Sandstone ashlar (side and rear of coursed squared
stone), hipped slate roof. Elongated plan at right-angles to
the road, in 3 parts: a double-depth double-fronted block next
to the road, an added crosswing to the left, and a set-back
service wing attached to the left of this.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys. The principal element (including the
crosswing) is 1:3 windows, with rusticated quoins, 1st-floor
sillband and moulded gutter cornice (with acroteria to the
wing). The main range is symmetrical, with an Ionic porch
which has enriched capitals including lion masks between the
volutes, and an entablature with moulded cornice and plain
blocking course, protecting a door with round-headed panels
and a plain overlight; and windows with plain reveals, those
at ground floor with altered glazing and those above unhorned
sashes without glazing bars. The 3-window right-hand return
wall has a corniced doorway to the rear, an iron fire escape
to a doorway at 1st floor (altered from a window), 2 unhorned
sashed windows at ground floor with vertical glazing bars, and
2 unhorned sashes without glazing bars at 1st floor. The wing
to the left, projecting slightly, has steps up to a
Venetian-style French window at ground floor, with a
pilastered architrave including a cornice with urns and a
radiant tympanum with a keystone, and at 1st floor a
tripartite sashed window with shouldered architrave. Side-wall
chimney to the right, and another chimney at the junction with
the wing. The 4-window service wing has raised quoins and
openings with plain surrounds. The rear wall of the main range
abuts the end gable-end of No.87, but has a 3-light stair
window above the junction with this.
INTERIOR: fine open-well staircase in rear of wing, with
elaborate cast-iron balusters and coved moulded plaster
ceiling.
