Description

TQ 67 41 BRENCHLEY HIGH STREET, BRENCHLEY
(south side)
15/112 Williams Gibbons headstone
about 9m south of the south
aisle of the Church of All
Saints
GV II

Headstone. Early C18. Freestone. Shouldered headstone with scrolled corners
and a round-headed arched head with a relief carving of a cherub. The
inscription commemorates William Gibbons of the Parsonage, died 1716. Carved
below are the words "Done by Ambrose Gibbons and John Fuggle Grandsons". The
attribution is unusual at this date, although a late C17 headstone in the
churchyard has a similar inscription, suggesting a tradition whereby relatives
(either professional or amateur masons) made headstones for members of their
family.
