Description

ATHERINGTON LANGRIDGEFORD
SS 52 SE
5/32 Higher Zeal and Lower Zeal
-
GV II

2 cottages, probably originally a small tenement farmhouse. Late C17 or C18 with
C19 alterations. Whitewashed rendered stone rubble and cob. Thatch roof with
gable ends. Brick stack at left end, axial brick stack, and brick shaft to large
rubble stack at right end with off-set, drip and tapered cap.
Overall 3-room plan, with large axial stack backing onto possible former cross-
passage but with partition removed. The 2 cottages are divided by this stack but
an internal blocked doorway beside it suggests they were formerly a single
dwelling.
2 storeys. 5 window range of late C19/C20 2-light casements 2 panes per light.
Three 2-light casements to ground floor, 3-, 2- and 6 panes per light from left to
right. Slated leanto roofs to 2 porches with wide plank doors. Plank door to
leanto at left end with corrugated iron roof. Outshots to rear of each cottage.
Roof of 5 pegged trusses with straight principal rafters and waney common rafters.
Interiors altered.
