Formerly houses, now 3 shops. C16 or earlier with C17 additions to south and
east, C18 facades and later alterations and additions and rear ranges. No. 38,
Co-op Pharmacy. Timber framed and plastered facade, C16 original red brick rear
wing, grey slate roof, right red brick chimney stack, rear left fine tall C16
red brick chimney stack, moulded base, 6 octagonal shafts with moulded rings and
capping. Moulded eaves cornice. 2 storeys. 5 first floor small paned
vertically sliding sashes, 2 similar windows to ground floor left, central 6
panelled door, reveal panels, moulded capitals and bases to half columns,
moulded frieze, flat canopy. Right C19 shop front, pedimented pilasters enclose
the fascia, C20 shop door to left, window to right. No. 40, Dry Cleaning
Centre. Painted brick, red plain tiled roof. Left external large attached shaft
chimney stack shared with No. 42. 2 storeys. Central 2 storey bow with C20
casements to each floor, brick bands at window head height. C20 door to right.
No. 42, Krystyna Hairstylist. A lower, smaller 2.storey.range, painted brick,
grey slate roof, tall, attached shaft red brick chimney stack to right, shared
with No. 40. Single small paned vertically sliding sash window to first floor.
Shop bay window to right with glazing bars. Fascia over. Left recessed C20
glazed door, reveal panels, fluted surround, frieze, fluted brackets, flat
canopy. To left, east, is a remnant of the wall and buttress of the demolished
Parish Church of St. Michael and All Angels, said to have been built 1616 and
demolished 1906, of red brick and flint with plinth. The buttress forward of
No. 42, the wall continuing through the ground floor return. The original red
brick rear wing has 2 and 3 light mullion windows. Various other rear ranges.
