Corner site with St John¿s Street qv and including as part of the same premises No 41 St John¿s Street. 2 separate buildings. The one on corner of Market Place is late C18 altered. 3 storeys, attic and cellars. Stone and stuccoed ground floor with rusticated and vermiculated quoins and surrounds to windows, on projecting plinth, with moulded string at springing of arches, plain frieze and cornice with stone band over. Brick upper part with stone architrave window surrounds and stone key blocks. Moulded and bracketed stone cornice. Brick parapet with stone coping. Hipped slate roof, mansard. Front to Market Place - 3 C18 2-light dormers, slate cheeks, 5 windows to upper floors, no glazing bars to lower 2nd floor sashes and 3 round headed windows on 1st floor. On ground floor ¿ door to left hand and 4 windows in arched recesses, no glazing bars, with brackets at springing of arch, and cill breaking into architrave surround. The doors 6-panel studded double. Top panels arched. 4 segmental headed cellar windows, vermiculated voussoirs and plain grilles. Later one storey extension right hand with 6-panel door, architrave surround, cornice and pediment on scroll brackets. Elevation to St John¿s Street ¿ 2 dormers, 3 windows (2 on 2nd floor no glazing bars) same general design.
The ground floor of both fronts altered C19. An old print shows ground floor to Market Place with central door and 4 windows.
No 41 St John¿s Street, adjoining corner block is early C19. 3 storeys, Bath stone. Rusticated ground floor on projecting plinth. Wide string at 1st floor level with double stepped blocking course over, supporting 2 fluted Ionic columns flanking centre bay and outer square piers, all with carved bases and caps, supporting entablature and blocking course with panelled centre block. Slate roof. 3 square windows, centre false on 2nd floor, 3 windows on 1st floor, recessed sashes glazing bars intact. 2 semi-circular headed windows on ground floor and 6 panel double door (mahogany) to left hand with plain arched fanlight. Ground floor windows and door in recessed arches with voussoir heads.

All the listed buildings on the South West Side, South East Side, Market Hall, Market Cross and the Fountain form a group.

The National Westminster Old Bank forms a very fine group with Nos 23 to 41 (consec) St John¿s Street.
